Vilnius, Lithuania

  • Stayed July 2018
  • Accommodation: Mikalo House – fab place, great location. Treated myself to a private room which came with its own balcony, a lovely little sun trap on an afternoon.

Vilnius oozes cool. Yes it has beautiful churches and striking architecture like many other cities that make it Instagram pretty but there is so much more to Vilnius than that. This is a city with a sense of humour rocking a bohemian vibe that knows how to have a good time. From the Frank Zappa statue to the tongue in cheek tributes to Lithuanian writers on Literatu street (Literatų gatvė) and the self-proclaimed Republic of Užupis (which has its own quirky constitution and stamps passports on its Independence Day 1st April), I knew I wasn’t ‘in Kansas Anymore Toto’ when strolling the streets of Vilnius. I loved it!

Quite by accident I managed to schedule my visit during the Lithuania Song Festival, a traditional song and dance festival which UNESCO has proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. It’s an event that takes place every four years and it was a lovely experience seeing so many young people dressed in traditional outfits, proudly representing their culture.
